91. Hearts Still Beating, Season Seven, Episode Eight. Original Air Date = December 11, 2016

Maggie is sitting by Glenn and Abraham’s graves.  She stands up, and climbs up to the look out perch at Hilltop. She looks out at the land beyond the gate. Gregory walks up behind her. He says that people are saying nice things about her and Sasha, but not to let it go to her head. And she says, ‘don’t let it bother you, it seems like it bothers you’. He asks her what she’s doing up there, while he rubs an apple against his chest. Another guy tells Gregory that Maggie is pregnant so he gives her the apple – not because he wants to, but because he’s shamed into it.

Negan decides to shave, and explains to Carl and Judith that you must shave against the grain. Carl doesn’t have the bandage on over his eye, probably because Negan told him to take it off.

Daryl in his cell has decided to take a chance with the key. He exits his cell.

Now Negan is making spaghetti sauce at Rick’s house and asks Carl if he wants a taste. Carl is rolling dough of some sort. How creepily domestic.

Olivia and Tara are outside on the porch and Tara hands her a can of lemonade. She says Denise liked it, and Olivia thanks her for it.

Negan sits at the head of the table, while Carl sets it. Olivia is holding Judith, and brings over the pitcher of lemonade and serves Negan. He smiles.

Rick and Aaron are still out at the lake of doom with the bobbing walkers. They look out at the houseboat, and note that the little boat is filled with bullet holes and will probably take on water really fast. It’s probably not the best mode of transportation that they can take to the houseboat. Aaron breaks some of the boards from the sign and they start paddling. Woo hoo!

At the table, Negan waits for Rick. Finally Negan says that Lucille is hungry. He sets Lucille in her own chair and tells Carl to pass the rolls. Carl sits still. Negan adds ‘please’. Carl passes the rolls.

Credits

Eugene walks inside the gates of Alexandria looking very concerned. He watches as Spencer totes up his stuff and gives it to the Saviors. A woman with a nose ring and a tattoo comes on to Spencer, while her male companion compliments Spencer for his diligence and ability.

Carol sits by a fire in her house, and sees Morgan in her yard. He comes in with fruits and vegetables. He smiles and she says that apparently some people don’t believe that she wants to be left alone. She tells him he can go, he tells her he thinks she’s going soft. She says that he’s just going. They open the door and Richard is standing there with bottles of something. He wants to talk to them.

Back to the sinking boat and the lake walkers. Rick and Aaron bash a few walkers, well, more than a few, and keep on going. Aaron helpfully tells us that they’re almost there. ‘Almost there’ turns out to be another boat with a walker in it. Aaron gets pulled into the water by a walker. Will he make it out? Do I care? He makes it and pops up out of the water. He says he’s okay and he swims back to the houseboat.

Daryl is trying to escape, and two people have a mishap with a mop and its gross contents. Daryl sees some peanut butter and eats it greedily. He starts to change clothes so that he won’t have a big number on his chest.

Aaron and Rick go through the houseboat looking for stuff they can take back.

Daryl eats peanut butter as he hides. He knocks over some stuff and leaves the room.

Rick and Aaron load up their truck. Rick apologizes to Aaron for everything. Aaron says he saw what happened on the road. This is the way we keep on living. Its all about whether your hearts are beating or not. We do what they (the Saviors) say so we can live. They’re being watched by someone on the opposite shore. We only see his feet.

Michonne aims her gun at the redheads’s head while she drives. Well, now we have a full house, I think that’s all of the cast now. Man. Michonne asks how long the woman has been with Negan and how long has she been out there alone. The woman says nothing. Michonne puts her gun down. The woman keeps driving. Michonne wants to win.

Maggie is eating a cucumber, and Sasha comes in. They have an apple pie because people were happy about how they killed the walkers and bulldozed the Gremlin. Enid is also there. Sasha covers for Jesus’s absence. Maggie steps outside leaving Sasha and Enid alone. Enid says that Sasha is lying about Jesus, and asks why. Sasha says it’s for Maggie’s own good. Sasha tells Enid that they have to keep Maggie safe.

Richard tells Morgan and Carol that a lot of people came together after the world fell apart. He lost hope in people and then he met Ezekiel and the Kingdom and it gave him hope. Ezekiel cut a deal with the Saviors. Richard says that right now they have peace between the Saviors and the Kingdom, but eventually things will go bad. And when they do, the Kingdom will fall. Richard lost his family, saw them die, he’s now worried about losing it all.

Morgan wants to know what he’s asking of them. Richard said he’s asking them to convince Ezekiel to attack the Saviors first.

Rosita has her bullet. In the church Gabriel asks her if that is for you or for him. She says it’s for him.  Gabriel agrees that Negan has to be killed. Gabriel says if this is our last conversation then there’s no reason to lie to him. Rosita explains everything to Gabriel – Maggie doesn’t have Glenn anymore as a father, she names off the others who can fight. Gabriel says that it shouldn’t be her, but they will win. They need to wait for the right time to do it together. He says they need her. He tries to talk her out of her suicide mission to kill Negan. He walks off before she decides what to do.

Back at Savior HQ, Daryl dodges many Saviors in his escape.

Richard says the element of surprise is important. Carol doesn’t want to fight, she doesn’t want to be a part of this, she wants to be left alone. Richard tries to convince them to fight, he’s desperate. He wants them to choose now, there’s a peace now. Richard doesn’t believe this peace will last. He leaves. She tells Morgan he should go too, and he does.

Spencer walks into his ransacked house. All of his stuff is strewn everywhere – back from an episode or two ago when they were looking frantically around for the missing guns.  He gets cleaned up and practices saying ‘hi’ in the mirror. He goes outside.

Richard is now outside, standing by a ‘no camping’ sign. He knocks down the sign and goes into a hidden camper. There are supplies there. He cries a bit and breaks a bottle of water. Maybe the camper belonged to his family.

Spencer walks down the street in Alexandria, and Rosita asks if he has a hot date. He tells her that he’s going to try to get closer to them – infiltrate. Rosita says ‘okay!’.  Spencer says that he thought they (he and Rosita) had something good, why did she start and end it? She says he’s cute, and he helps her not think about shit. She used him and she apologizes for that. He asks her to dinner – no strings. She says okay. She shakes her head and smiles after he goes. He’s particularly douchy in this scene.

Daryl is back outside and he runs to one of the motorcycles in the Savior motorcycle lot. Fat Joseph sees him. Daryl approaches him with his metal pole. Daryl bashes him in the head and keeps on hitting him. Wow, Daryl. Jesus comes up to Daryl, who really does look nuts. Daryl grabs Fat Joseph’s gun and off they go.

Spencer goes up to Arat and asks to talk to Negan. She says no, but Negan says to let him pass. Spencer introduces himself smarmely to Negan.

The redhead stops the car and says ‘that’s Negan.’ She says ‘we’re all Negan’. The woman says Michonne still has options. They do a u-turn.

Rick and Aaron get back to Alexandria only to find the Saviors there already. Rick asks where Negan is and is told that he’s at Rick’s house. Rick gets stopped by a Savior minion.

Meanwhile, Negan and Spencer drink scotch on Rick’s porch. Negan says it feels like a vacation. Negan wants to play pool and Spencer says that the house next door has one. He says that Spencer may be his new best friend. Oh, that can’t be good.

Aaron is standing by the truck and the girl with the nose-ring asks him about the note (the one they found at the houseboat). The minions are upset because they think the note is meant for them. Aaron tries to explain that they found it, but the minions don’t believe him. They manhandle Aaron and beat him up.

Negan pulls out the pool table to the street and Spencer and Negan get ready for a game. Negan breaks the balls on the table and says talk to me about Rick. Meanwhile the minions keep beating up Aaron. Spencer and Negan discuss Rick and Spencer tells Negan that Rick doesn’t work well with others. The Alexandrians watch as the two play pool.

Spencer bad-mouths Rick and plays pool. Negan listens, and wants to know what Spencer is proposing. Spencer proposes that Negan should put Spencer in charge of Alexandria.

Minions keep beating up Aaron. They finish and Rick goes to Aaron, picks him up and carries him off.

Negan is thinking about what Rick is doing. Negan says Rick is getting shit done. That takes guts. And then there’s you (Spencer). The guy who waited till Rick was gone before he decided to bad-mouth him. So why not kill Rick himself? Negan thinks that Spencer has no guts. And then he guts Spencer! Spencer holds onto his guts and falls over. Negan says you did have guts! They were inside you all the time! Rosita looks on in horror, as do the rest of them. Negan wants someone to come over and clean this mess up. No one wants to finish the game of pool with Negan. Rosita pulls out her gun and pulls the trigger.

Rosita misses (from about five paces) and Negan is horribly horribly mad. He picks up the bullet and demands to know more about it. He sees that the bullet is homemade. He tells Arat to move the knife to Rosita’s face. But he wants to know who made the bullet. Rosita says she made it. Negan laughs at her and says she’s a badass, but she’s lying. Arat cuts Rosita’s face and Negan tells Arat to kill someone. It seems that Arat will kill Rosita, but she whips around and shoots Olivia. Poor Olivia.

Rick walks up at that point, and sees the mayhem. Negan wants Rick to say thank you to Negan. He didn’t kill Carl  after Carl tried to kill him.  And he killed Spencer because Spencer was going to kill Rick.  Rick tells Negan his shit is waiting for him at the gate and to just go. Eugene confesses that he made the bullet. Negan is surprised. But once Eugene starts speaking geek speak, Negan believes him. Negan asks Lucille to give him strength. Negan tells Rick he’s still in the hole, and that whatever they scavenged isn’t enough. They take Eugene with them. Rick cries.

Spencer rises as a walker, and Rick puts him down.

In a jail with an axe at night. Michonne walks in to see Rick. They embrace. Michonne says she found what she was looking for. She wanted to go with him and Aaron, but she had to go her way. She wanted for things to be theirs. She says there are more Saviors then they thought, but it doesn’t change how she feels. She says that the two of them are still here. How do they make that mean something? She says that’s why they have to fight – not for themselves, but for Judith and Carl, and Alexandria. She says they can fight them and beat them, but only if we do this. Rick says that he knows that now. They kiss.

Morning, and we’re back with Maggie at the graves, and she’s climbing up to the perch like she did at the beginning of the episode. This time she smiles and calls for Enid and Sasha. It’s Rick, Michonne, Tara, Rosita, and Carl, at the gate. She tells them they’re okay. Rick tells Maggie she was right. They have to fight. Jesus and Daryl walk over to them. It’s almost a montage of happy and meaningful looks, with meaningful music in the background. Rick is happy to see Daryl and they man hug.  Sasha and Rosita share a look and nod at each other. Everyone hugs. Carl smiles at Enid. Daryl gives Rick a gun. Looks like they’re all ready to fight.  Jesus looks on at all of them.  More meaningful looks as the group walks over to the big house – probably to plot and strategize and fight the war that’s coming up.

Gabriel is on night duty and the person with the boots walks up to Alexandria.
