7. Monster, Season Two, Episode One. Original Air Date = April 10, 2016

It’s night and we see Maddie from the back. Fires have sprung up everywhere on the beach by Strand’s house. She’s looking out toward the ocean.  Nick, Alicia, and Ofelia are on an inflatable raft headed toward the Abigail. Travis, Maddie and Chris are on the beach with Liza’s body. They’re worried that Strand won’t come back for them.

Strand turns on the controls on The Abigail.  Nick sees Strand at the controls. He’s looking at something else in the distance, all in flames. It could be people on other boats. Strand directs Nick to get the inflatable raft and pick up the others on the beach.

Travis and Maddie look up and see flames and a horde of walkers at Strand’s house. No clue how all of that happened. Clearly there was a small time jump, and Strand’s generators must have failed during that time, allowing all of the walkers to come streaming in. Chris picks up a rock to defend himself against the walkers. The walkers attack. One fights with Travis, and Travis hits it in the head. Nick comes racing back on the boat. Travis fights another one and it gets the upper hand, so Maddie kills it. Everyone is fighting their own walker. Travis kills a walker, but more keep coming. Nick yells at them to get to the boat. Maddie has luggage and stuff, Travis has Liza’s body. Chris is there too, not sure what he’s bringing to the boat. Walkers rise from the water and attack. Nice visuals with the black water, dead people rising from it and the land all in flames. Nick turns the propeller toward the walker and the walker gets his head propelled off. It’s kind of gross, but in a good way.

Then we see the empty beach – well, empty except for walkers. The inflatable raft races off toward the Abigail.

Daniel sees them arrive, and Strand says ‘well done, Nick.’ They unload everything onto the yacht.

Strand eases the controls in the darkness as everyone arrives. They look at the burning shore and Strand’s house. Everything is in flames. They all seem a litle overwhelmed.  A military plane flies overhead in the darkness. Given what Daniel says later, maybe it’s a bomber and that’s why there are so many fires. The fires are from dropping bombs.

Daytime. Maddie asks how far can they go in the yacht, and Strand replies 3,000 miles. Daniel says that will give us some options. Strand says yeah, it can take us all the way to El Salvador.  Hmm, does he know something about Daniel?

Madison and Alicia see a raft filled with people. Madison wants to pick them up, Strand doesn’t. Strand says their little group can be saved but not that many more. Alicia wants to bring them aboard. Travis isn’t so sure either. He directs Alicia to the radio to see if they can find more information about what is happening to them.

Strand wants to go to San Diego because of the military. He does not want to add more people to the yacht. Travis agrees. Maddie and Alicia want to bring them aboard. In the end, there is not rescue.

Alicia is listening to the radio. Chaos on land. People are dying, so says the voice on the radio.

Outside, Daniel has a gun aimed at the raft. The Coast Guard says there is no rescue for land, air, or water. Forgive us.  Well, that’s depressing.

Strand comes out to the controls (I think there are two sets of controls – one on top and outside, the other inside) and he and Nick sit down. Nick said they should have stopped to pick up the people. Strand says we had this conversation in the pen. He has whiskey or scotch in a glass tumbler. Nick has a cigarette. How civilized. Nick wants to know what happens if San Diego doesn’t work. Strand doesn’t know. He doesn’t seem concerned either.

Alicia and Maddie discuss their destination of San Diego – it might not be safe there. Alicia is going to continue monitoring the radio.

Maddie goes to talk to Travis. He doesn’t know what to do about Liza. They fight about whether or not to pick up people. Travis thinks that those people could be infected. And he needs to know if Maddie is with him. She says she is.

Alicia is monitoring the radio. Someone is alive and the voice wants to know if there is anyone out there. Alicia is hearing what he’s saying. The guy wants to hear who is on the other end. Alicia debates about whether or not to answer the mic, and finally decides. She says ‘I’m here’.  Gratuitous Bowie in the background (5 years). We don’t care about these people enough yet to have sad music….

Chris looks at Liza’s body and is sad. He holds her hand and kisses her forehead. She’s wrapped in a white sheet. He covers her back up very carefully and holds her hand through the sheet.

Daniel is fishing off the side of the boat and Chris walks up to him. Chris grabs a fishing pole as well. Chris wants to know what they can catch out there. Daniel says yellow tail, white fish. Daniel says he’s sorry about Liza, Chris says he’s sorry about Daniel’s wife. ‘Neither of us got to say goodbye,’ says Chris. Daniel says it wouldn’t matter, and then brings in an eel. It slithers on the deck until Daniel bashes it over the head. Symbolic much?

Down below deck, Nick almost runs right into Ofelia. He offers to fix her bandage, since her wound is bleeding, but she says she can manage. She probably thinks he’s hitting on her, but he seems to genuinely want to help. He offers her helpful hints anyway, like put ointment on the bandage itself, use ice, and drink alcohol. She smiles and walks upstairs.

Alicia is talking to a guy on another boat. He thinks they’re safe where they are. She asks where they are, but he doesn’t know if he should say. She understands. He asks where she was when it happened. Alicia is quiet.  Finally she says it was over before she knew it even started. He says he’s sorry.  Then she asks if he’s lost anyone. They never get back to that.

Back on deck. Travis sees Daniel and asks how Chris is doing. Daniel keeps Chris’s confidence. He says they didn’t talk, they were fishing. He then adds that one day Chris will understand Travis’ act of mercy regarding Liza. And that he wishes that he could trade his failure for Travis’ mercy.

Morning, and Maddie is looking through binoculars at something. She goes inside looking for Strand.  The controls are on but no Strand. She looks at them and then goes upstairs and finds Strand.  She thinks she heard music on the water.  He doesn’t think so.

No one has had any sleep. Madison wonders how deep the water is where they are. Strand says 44 meters. She wants to know if they can bury Liza there.

Meanwhile Alicia and unknown guy are still talking. He’s pumping her for information and wondering if they have enough fuel to make it to Hawaii. Alicia says nothing. They’ve already talked about water – he only has a little, and Alicia says they have a desalinization area on board. Unknown guy says they must be rich. She says no, they’re just passengers – which is actually a lot of information.

Madison wants to know what Daniel thinks is next. He says if this is the end of the world then it’s already over. She comments that she doesn’t trust Strand, even though he hasn’t lied to them. Daniel says that he was packing his bags before the bombs fell.

Alicia looks at her temporary tattoo from Matt.  The guy on the radio says most are dead. Alicia says she’s sorry.

Chris, Madison, Travis, and everyone except Strand prepare to bury Liza at sea. Travis says a few words. He says very nice things about her, her strength, her goodness, her selflessness, and that ‘the best thing we ever did together was our son, who she loved more than anything or anyone.’ Chris is steely. He walks over to Liza and Travis. He looks at her body and dumps her in the water. Then he walks off. Travis follows him. Liza’s body sinks in the water.

Chris and Travis fight. He punches Travis and yells that Travis shot her. Chris thinks he could have fixed it (a junior fixer – Travis is a fixer). Everyone is in the living area now and Madison goes to Travis. She sees his bloody lip.

Alicia goes back to  the radio. Jack is the guy who she’s been speaking to. They’re sinking. Alicia wants to save him. Strand wants to know if Alicia told them anything about their group or the yacht. She says no, but she realizes that she did. Strand tells the group that now is the time to explain the rules of the boat. Rule #1 is that it’s his boat and they aren’t adding any more people. Rule # 2 is that it’s his boat. If rules #1 and #2 aren’t clear enough, rule #3 is that it’s his goddamned boat.  Strand is tired. Nick wants to know why Strand saved him. Strand says he’s a survivor and that he’s fearless. He calls him Nicholas, and Nick doesn’t like it. Strand comments that that’s what his dad named him. So I guess Nick has daddy issues.

Madison goes to Chris and wants to know if his hand hurts. She says she remembers the first time she hit her dad. Woah, Madison, the first time you hit your dad? She was 13 and it didn’t end well. She tells Chris he should eat. She tells him the hurt stays, but that killing Liza had to happen. If Travis hadn’t done it, she would have. She would never let that happen to someone she loves (become a walker).

Food on the table. Eel and drinks. Nice china. Very fancy stuff. And the entire eel on a serving plate, looking all charcoal color and eely. Yum (not really).  Music, but no words. They’re doing another little montage and clearly discussing the food they’e about to eat. Chris comes down with his hoodie over his head and walks away from the group to outside on deck. He walks toward the water and the smoke plume heading their way.

The group inside hear a splash and they rush out. Chris has jumped into the water and Nick goes in after him.  He grabs Chris. They argue.

Nick dives into the water. Alicia is on the radio. She tells Jack they can’t come to get him. It’s too dangerous. He says it’s okay, he has them – meaning he knows where they are. Strand isn’t looking at the controls until it beeps at him. He sees Jack’s group, I think.  Alicia is scanning the water.

Nick is under water and a guy with long hair floats by. We’re supposed to think it’s Chris but it isn’t. It’s a walker! Nick surfaces and yells.

Oh wow, it looks like a wreck – of a boat? Maybe a capsized boat? It’s probably where the walker came from.  Chris begins to swim back to the yacht, as does Nick.  Then Nick says he thinks he hears someone and begins to swim to the person.

Travis takes the inflatable raft out to rescue Nick and Chris. He grabs Chris.

Nick floats to the wreckage. Many holes in the metal. Gun shots? Nick is looking at it.  Travis jumps overboard. More fights with walkers, but Nick gets away.  He dives and swims away – which I guess walkers can’t do.  He surfaces.

Strand sees something on the controls and says ‘holy shit’. He says ‘we should be leaving now, someone is joining us.’ Looks like they’re all aboard the inflatable raft and they’re coming back to the Abigail.

Maybe Strand sees another boat nearby and the people on that boat killed the people on the boat that Nick was exploring. And now they might be after the Abigail. So they have to escape. We don’t know yet what happened to the capsized boat.
