3. The Dog, Season One, Episode Three. Original Air Date = September 13, 2015

Chris is peering out the window of the barber shop – he sees the continuing riot outside. A man in a hood walks up to the door and sees Chris. He’s got red-rimmed, opaque walker eyes. Chris is startled and moves away from the window.

At Maddie’s – sirens can be heard, as she dims the lights and looks at the drugs she got for Nick. Alicia is at the window and looking across the street. ‘What was that sound?’, she asks. ‘What did Mr. Dawson do?’ Alicia asks. Maddie isn’t sure. Nick is worried about how much of the oxy is left. Maddie says not to worry, there’s enough to get them to the desert. Hard to tell if Nick is trying to ration them out or if he is trying to get high. As he’s crushing up the drugs, he says he’s the expert about drugs, not Maddie.

At the barbershop, Travis is trying to make a plan. Chris wants them to leave as a family, Travis and Liza say no. They all hear looters breaking into the office next door, and so are getting antsy. Chris picks up a razor and Daniel sees him and tells him to put it back. Daniel and Travis discuss how things aren’t going to be fine. Chris touches the wall, it’s getting hot and the paneling is starting to bubble – there’s a fire next door – they have to get out now. They make a plan to get to the truck. They open the door and are immediately attacked by rioters and looters. They all run out. We see a walker-cop knock down another cop and then start munching his neck. They run together as a group as best they can – through the cars on fire, the looting, the screaming, the sheer chaos.

Back at Maddie’s – Nick, Maddie, and Alicia start to play a game of Monopoly while they wait for Travis and co to show up. Personally, I can’t imagine playing a game of Monopoly while all of this is going on, but okay, I’ll roll with it.

Downtown, chaos is increasing as our group tries to get away. They’re running through some construction as they try to get away. Griselda is hurt by some scaffolding that fell on her. She’s trapped. The group turn back and rescue her and Travis carries her to the truck. Miraculously, the truck is there, in one piece. Good thing because Griselda’s foot is severely wounded. Travis starts the truck and they fight their way out. Travis is driving, and Chris is in the passenger seat. Griselda, Liza, Daniel, and Ofelia are in the back of the truck.

Maddie and co are still playing monopoly, when they hear another noise. They’re all jumpy and worried. Alicia wonders how long they’re going to have to wait, and says that it reminds her of when they used to wait for their dad to come home. We then hear a bit about Maddie’s deceased husband.

Travis is driving by the hospital – Griselda needs a doctor, badly. But – it’s a nightmare there. Police are present, and people are running and milling around. Travis is directed to keep moving. They stop to look see the cops shoot a patient who is now a walker. There is smoke billowing from the hospital. They continue driving in spite of Griselda’s wounded foot. Their plan B is another hospital, but they’re worried that all of the hospitals will be just as bad. Travis and Daniel are keeping score, who’s indebted to whom. They finally decide to go to Maddie’s. The Salazars will leave in the morning. Lights are still on in most of L.A. but as Chris looks out the window of the truck, they start to see swaths of L.A. go dark, huge square chunks of the city go dark at a time. Almost all of the lights go out, and then finally they all go dark. It’s a great scene.

Maddie, Nick and Alicia are in the kitchen. The lights go out. Alicia goes to put the game away in the dark. Nick warns Maddie that they can’t stay here, they know what’s out there. Alicia calls them to the window to see Mr. Dawson. Nick says get away from the window. They hear a noise outside. It’s a dog and they let it in. There is blood on the dog but doesn’t seem to belong to the dog. The dog starts barking. They see Mr. Dawson shamble toward them. They rush outside to leave before he gets to them. They go out the back and go through the back yards and into Susan and Patrick’s house. They’re good friends with Mr. and Mrs. Tran and they know where the spare key is. No one answers and the lights come on. Still, no answer. Are they there, but walkers, or are they not there at all? They cruise through the house. Alicia looks at family photos on the wall. Lights out again. Nick has the flashlight. Nick found the shotgun and now they look for bullets as Alicia wanders around the living room. The dog is barking ouside. Alicia looks out the window and sees that Mr. Dawson is in their house. They load the gun. Mr. Dawson attacks the dog. A truck drives up. They all run out the front door to the truck – who may or may not be Travis.

It is Travis. He made it. They’re all in Maddie’s house now, including the Salazars and Liza and Chris.  Maddie is trying to warn them, and Travis sees Dawson by the sliding glass door eating the dog. Travis walks toward him, trying to reason with him. Seriously? The lights come on and they can see Peter’s face. He knocks Travis down and tries to bite him.  Alicia runs next door to get the shells and sees a prescription drug bottle and a teacup on a small table. These are the only two things on the table, so we’re meant to notice them. Maybe Susan intentionally or unintentially killed herself? Alicia sees a pair of feet behind a swinging door. She runs. Meanwhile, Daniel shoots Peter in the face but didn’t destroy the brain so Peter doesn’t die. Daniel shoots him again, this time in the head and down he goes with half of his skull blown off. His skull is kind of cratered, so the brain must have gotten blown out. Eww.  Daniel gives the gun back to Maddie. Silence in the room.  Chris runs outside to throw up. Alicia is running back to the house and is lost in Susan’s maze-like backyard and is grabbed by walker-Susan. Maddie hears Alicia scream and they try to pull her over the fence. Chris saves her from Susan, and almost gets his nose broken in the process. Once Alicia is safe, everyone wonders whether or not Susan is sick.  Nick says she isn’t sick, she’s dead. Alicia freaks out and says Matt’s not like that. Travis asks Nick why he would say that and Nick says it’s the truth. Chris is bleeding. His nose might be broken, but maybe not. Chris asks what’s wrong with Pete Dawson and Susan. Travis says they’re sick. Chris asks if they’re going to get sick too and Travis says they’ll be okay.

Maddie and Alicia want to go to the desert now, but Travis says it’s dark and they should wait and leave in the morning. Maddie says that if they’re staying they have to get rid of Peter’s body.  Yeah, and his brain too, wherever it is. Daniel suggests burning Peter’s body. Daniel says if they burn him the sickness won’t be spread.

Travis comes back inside and Liza agrees that they don’t die, they keep coming back. Travis says thanks to Liza for helping Griselda. Liza says she didn’t help because Griselda is still going to die from blood poisoning for lack of a doctor who could take care of that wound.

Maddie looks out the window and tells Travis about the drugs for Nick. Realization is starting to settle in. The lights are on. Liza is in the kitchen with Maddie. Maddie asks Liza to kill her if she becomes like Susan. Liza says nothing, but it looks like she’s capable of honoring that request if need be. Maddie continues to look at Susan who is trapped in the fence making walker noises.

(day four) Morning. Susan is still trying to get through the fence and failing. Daniel explains to Chris how to load and shoot the gun. He also explains the different types of bullets. Travis interrupts Daniel – he doesn’t want Chris handling guns. Travis and Maddie discuss. Travis doesn’t like guns, Maddie thinks it’s a good idea for Chris to know these things.

Maddie goes ouside and stands just out of arms reach from Susan. She has a hammer and is contemplating killing Susan. Travis walks up to Maddie. Maddie wants to kill Susan and Travis says no, she might just be sick and can be saved. They both walk away, leaving Susan making walker sounds in her backyard. They load up the truck and the car. Maddie gets in the car with Alicia and Nick.  Nick asks her for drugs. He’s worried there won’t be enough. Maddie tells Nick she gave some of the drugs to Mrs. Salazar. Nick is unamused. Daniel doesn’t want to go with Travis’ group. He wants to stay at the house. Ofelia says Travis’ family are good people. Daniel says good people are the first to die. Travis and Maddie’s group get in the car and truck and see military helicopters above. Travis backs out of the driveway to go, Maddie, Alicia, and Nick behind them. We see the kids’ inflatable house across the street, deflated on the ground. From our vantage point we can see that it’s covered with blood. The streets are eerily empty. Maddie sees Patrick drive up and she turns the car around to warn him about Susan. He seems kind of oblivious given all of the chaos from the previous day. He looks up to see the helicopters, and then he goes into his yard and sees Susan. Susan grabs him in a hug and is about to bite him when she is shot from behind by an unseen hand. The military swoops in and move everyone away from Susan’s body.

Military personnel ask everyone questions – who they are and if they live there. Patrick is taken away because Susan’s blood got on him. No one really knows how people become infected, and blood from an infected person might be one of those ways. Reasonable thought.

Nick goes exploring. He’s looking for drugs and is trying to break into a house in order to get them. A girl sitting in a window sees him and waves to him and smiles. He waves back. He decides not to break into that house. Nick looks up to see a plane descending for a landing. The wings tilt before it unsteadily rights itself.  It looks like the military has a gun aimed at it, but maybe not. Travis thinks that since the calvary has arrived things will get better. They watch as Susan’s body is stacked with other bodies onto a truck.

The Salazars watch from the upsairs window as military people put giant black Xs on the walls of infected homes.
