23. The New Frontier, Season Three, Episode Two. Original Air Date = June, 4, 2017

It’s now night time, and the helicopter is flying toward its destination. Travis asks how much longer, and Jake says they’re about 20 min out. Now that they’re that close to the ranch, Jake messages that they are commencing radio silence.

All of a sudden shots are fired at the helicopter and Travis is hit in the neck. He’s bleeding severely. Alicia sees this, and Travis calmly says he needs help. Travis unbuckles himself – he knows his wounds are serious, so wants to jump out of the chopper before he dies and turns. He’s in shock, but he manages to unbuckle himself in spite of Alicia trying to stop him. He shows her a second wound he has sustained in his side. It looks more serious than his neck wound. At first I thought it was a walker bite, but I think he was probably shot more than once. The helicopter itself was hit multiple times. Alicia can see that he has been severely wounded. Travis lets himself fall out the open door to his death. Alicia looks down at her hands, which are covered with Travis’ blood.

Back at the beach hotel, more people are trying to get inside the gates. They are trying to convince Elena to let them in as they grab at her. Strand claims he’s a doctor and tells people to calm down. The people let Elena go. Strand tells them he’s injured too, just like them. He tells Elena to let them in. She does so.

The helicopter is down in some rocky terrain. Jake says Luciana is as stable as she’s going to get. Alicia wants to know why anyone would do this. Jake says she did the right thing. Alicia wants to know if Travis could have survived and Jake says no.

Heavy metal and the caravan heads toward the ranch. Madison turns off the music because she can’t stand it. Nice drone shot as the caravan goes through a hair pin curve and we see the ranch compound for the first time.

The ranch has a lot of farm animals. They find out that Jake and his group is overdue. Troy orders Madison and Nick out of the truck and they aren’t allowed inside the gates. Nick suggests they leave and backtrack. Madison says to give it some time. Nick wants to know what happens if Travis and Alicia never show. Madison’s response is to tell Nick to hug her and then she slips him a gun. It was kind of an icky hug, to tell you the truth, just a little too close…

Back at the hotel, Strand is removing bullets and things from people. He tells his “patient” that it wasn’t so bad, right? That Strand, he’s a crafty one.

Later, Elena calls for Strand to help deliver the baby. He’s stumped as to how that works. She tells him he has to put his hands inside of the woman. Strand states “that’s not going to happen”, but under threat of violence he decides to do his best.

At the ranch, Madison notes that most of the people are civilians. The leader of the ranch, Jeremiah Otto, offers Madison some coffee. He tells her that sometimes the chopper sets down if there’s weather. He asks her if Travis hijacked the helicopter, and she says no. He tells her that his son and god daughter on the chopper.

He finally decides to let Nick and Madison inside – welcome to Broke Jaw Ranch.

Nick says not to trust them, and she’s okay with that, and says to trust her.

Jeremiah discusses the apocalypse and how they were preparing for that, but the rise of the dead took them by surprise. He tells them that they’re building a new nation. He wants to know if they’re grateful for being there. He shows them to their quarters, and Madison thanks him.

Nick is super distrustful of this group of people, and he says it’s his fault that they’re in this mess – which is more true than he knows (thanks to the military base breach).

Back at the chopper site, the god daughter, Charlene, takes first watch. Jake and Alicia chat. Jake promises that Troy won’t be able to do anything once they get back. Jake says Troy’s been like that since he was a kid.

And Charlene gives the warning whistle. Jake goes off to find her, leaving Alicia alone in the dark. Are we going to find Travis? Jake falls down into a gully and we hear walker sounds. The next thing we know Jake is battling it. Can’t see if the walker is Travis is at this point. A shot is fired and the walker is killed — Alicia fired the shot. The walker wasn’t Travis, and Charlene has been killed as well. Jake has to kill her before she rises, and tells Alicia to go back while he does it. Alicia keeps walking as a shot is fired.

Strand is sitting in the open room, and Elena gives him a bottle of alcohol in thanks for safely delivering the baby. That was the good news. The bad news is that Elena wants him to go because people are going to find out he’s not a doctor, and when they do, there will be hell to pay. Hector says there is one more patient before he goes. A woman who won’t eat. If she dies, she turns. Strand agrees to talk to her – again under threat of violence. Hector has a gun in hand.

Strand is in one of the guest rooms. It’s filled with wrapped wedding presents that have seen better days. There is a mannequin in a wedding dress complete with a wreath on her head. It’s clearly supposed to be Jessica from a few episodes back. The woman who won’t eat is obviously Ilene, and she’s still crazy. She says she lost everything, and she’s hopeless.

Strand goes to open the balcony door in order to get some fresh air into the room. Once he’s successful, she goes out to get some air. She thanks him and says he’s an angel. He tells her that he delivered a baby. He felt that a new baby would give them all hope. She asks him where he would go if he were to leave, and then gives him a small box that was to be a wedding gift. He carefully opens the box (who knows what’s in there!) and then thanks her. She tells him he freed her little girl and kisses his cheek. Then she says there are no more generations and she jumps off of the balcony to her death.

Jake and Alicia are still out in the woods. He’s cleaning his gun. Alicia tells him she’s sorry about Charlene. She also tells him that Luciana is unconscious and she can’t wake her. Jake says they’ll carry her. He states that it’s a terrible world, isn’t it? Alicia offers to help carry Luciana.

They arrive at the ranch, half carrying, half dragging Luciana. Madison is there to greet Alicia. Madison looks beyond Alicia for Travis. Alicia tells her what happened, and Madison can’t believe it. Jake explains to his dad what happened.

The ranch folk don’t think Luciana is going to make it, and Troy says he’s going to shoot her. There’s a scuffle and finally Nick tells Troy he’ll do it. Troy gives Nick the gun. Nick aims the gun at Troy and says to let her in.

Jeremiah steps up and says that if Luciana has a pulse they’ll let her in, and for Nick to give the gun to him. Nick does so.

They take Luciana to the infirmary and the Jeremiah instructs people to secure her before they treat her. Madison wants to grieve for Travis alone, but she does walk in through the gate.

Madison walks along the road grieving and then Jeremiah comes by and sees her. He tells her that after his first wife left, he did a lot of Jack Daniels and coke, many a bad morning. She says if she believed in god, which she doesn’t, she’d get her children but not Travis. She’d think it was a cosmic joke.

He was worried she’d kill herself which would present another set of problems. She says it’s too soon to tell. He says they’re missing a beretta, and so he thought he’d ask her about it . He hands her a book so she can sign for the weapon. She does so. It’s camp policy. He says he’s sorry for her loss. She says Travis was a good man, and Jeremiah says I’m sure he was.

Meanwhile, Luciana is strapped down. Alicia and Nick watch over her. He thanks Alicia for bringing her back and asks if she’s okay. She says nothing and he hugs her. She begins to cry.

It’s dark outside and Strand, carrying an overnight bag, goes to a car – he’s got the keys. It’s a hot, fast little number. He says it’s his style and his color. He gets in and begins to drive it off. Nice wedding present.

Madison looks out the window and Alicia and Nick come in to see her. Madison tells Alicia to close the door. The three of them are now alone in their quarters. Madison says she’s okay. Madison wants to stay at the ranch even they have to take it over. Alicia says it’s insane. Madison counters that it’s their fate. They have to be stronger she says. She tells Alicia to tell her how it happened (Travis’ death).
