Inside La Colonia – a man is sneaking around. He has a woman and child with him – wife and daughter? The guard at the guard post isn’t watching – he’s literally asleep at his post. The family get to a section of the corrugated steel wall that they can pull back and sneak through, and leave La Colonia. When they get beyond that wall, the little girl wants to stay. Her parents say it’s not safe anymore. La Colonia isn’t safe? Well, they’re not so wrong about that, I don’t think.
The three of them run down a slope and into the bus of doom that marks the wall. They kick open the door of the bus, and then on the walker side, open the back door, and kill a walker. The man drags the walker into the bus and slices him open. They use the by now patented ‘disguise yourself with walker guts’ disguise and cover themselves with gore and then step out of the bus. The man comes out with his knife in the ready position, just in case the disguise fails, and the walkers ignore him. He then brings out his wife and child. They walk through the horde of walkers. Then we get a good aerial shot of the walkers, looking like multitudes of ants after you disturb an ant hill. Kind of reminds me of the Tiptoe Through The Tulips, Sam, and his ant-covered cookie from Walking Dead.
The family made it outside and into a neighborhood. They hear a speeding truck and hide behind a wall, but it’s too late, they’re seen. The guys point a gun at the man. They want to know where the man and his family have come from. They really want to know where La Colonia is, even though they didn’t call it that. The man gives the bandits his backpack in hopes that the men let him and his family go. The men take the backpack and kidnap the family anyway. I guess the man goes to the grocery store, and now the drug trades will stop?
Ofelia is in the truck – the one she stole from Strand. She’s at the Poco Cielo Hotel and Restaurant. She opens the door and is greeted by a walker that she promptly kills with a hammer to the head. Ofelia bangs on the railing inside with her hammer and hears nothing so she goes further inside. She walks purposefully to a door that opens onto a cozy little table on the beach. We see the vastness of the ocean. She has a flashback.
It’s Ofelia and her boyfriend sitting outside at a little table near the beach, maybe at the same restaurant where she is now. The boyfriend is going to take a job in Santa Fe, and he asks her to come with him. He puts an engagement ring in her drink for her to find. She sees it and wants to marry him. He says that her parents will be fine. He wants to ask her dad for her hand in marriage. She’s worried about the distance from her parents. It’s so far away.
Back to present. She’s back at her truck, and she’s siphoning gas from nearby trucks.
Meanwhile, back at the resort, people are planting plants, and getting the generator going. Elena is happy. They have ice! And Strand drinks a proper drink. People fish in the ocean (and didn’t catch any lemming-walkers from last week), and Alicia takes surfing lessons from Hector. They discuss Nick and how he jumps off things – like ski lifts.
Hector asks where Nick is now and Alicia doesn’t know where he is. She misses who he was, not who he is. She asks about Hector’s brother. His brother is gone, holed up in Tijuana (maybe that’s Antonio?). Madison brings them a cold drink – with ice – thanks to the generator.
Nick and Luciana in bed, she puts on some clothes, and there’s a knock on the door. The guy at the door says that Francisco left. So that was Francisco and his family at the beginning. Nick says they’ll go after them.
Strand says they can only run the generator for a few hours during the day, but not ever at night, so as to not draw attention to themselves. There’s a knock at the door. Elena says it’s Hector. Strand answers the door and is immediately stabbed by Jessica’s mom! She blames Strand for the death of her daughter. And yeah, he did ‘kill’ her, but she was already dead. Man! Crazy mom.
The people in the room try to save Strand. Strand is sweating. Alicia goes to get a first aid kit, and antibiotics if she can find them. No organs were hit says Andrés, who is attending Strand. Madison holds Strand’s hand. Andrés says he’s going to need more medicine than they have if they want to save Strand. That means someone is going to have to drive to get the drugs they need.
Back at La Colonia. Alejandro asks Luciana and Nick if they are going to go. They’re trying to figure out what happened with Francisco and why he left. Alejandro says that Francisco and his family are cowards. Alejandro wants Luciana and Nick to keep it quiet, and not to go anywhere.
Madison wants to know what Stand wants her to do. He wants the drinks to keep coming. He says Ilene, Jessica’s mom, needs to be watched forever – she’s unbalanced. Madison says Ilene will stay locked up. Madison can’t have violence here – no violence from anyone, it’s the only way it all works. Agreed? They all agree.
Alejandro gives a speech to the faithful: friends – some souls have lost faith and left. What lies beyond the wall is worse than death, it’ a wasteland, it’s the end. Death won’t take us so long as we stick together. We need to stand strong. With me. For we are more together than we are apart. The roomful of people are listening attentively to him. Nick asks Luciana if Alejandro is okay. Then people leave. Alejandro is touching his wound.
Luciana wants to get Francisco’s water. Alejandro accuses Luciana of betrayal, but Luciana says no, she’s loyal. Alejandro says no one leaves La Colonia until he says differently.
Back at the hotel, Madison and Elena get ready to go get the meds for Strand. They get in the hotel shuttle and off they go.
Elena and Madison talk while Elena drives. Antonio, Elena’s son is inside the warehouse. But Madison just wants to get the meds for Strand. They continue driving. Madison says for Elena not to give up on Antonio. She’s probably thinking about Nick.
Back at La Colonia – Nick and Luciana discuss Alejandro. Nick says they still have to make the trade. Nick says that if they don’t make the trade, the bandits will come for them. Luciana is loyal to Alejandro and says we stay.
Elena, Madison and co. arrive at the bandit’s grocery store – the one and only store in town. Elena wants to know where Antonio is. Only Elena and Madison are given permission to enter.
Nick goes to see Alejandro. He asks if Alejandro is okay. Nick tells him he thinks the bandits will come for them. Alejandro says they can’t touch us. He thinks the wall will stop them, Nick thinks otherwise. Nick says the danger is real and it’s now.
Alejandro says to have faith in him. And that Nick doesn’t have enough faith in him. Alejandro views himself as in charge. Nick wonders if he wants Nick to follow him blindly, and Alejandro pretty much does. Alejandro looks sweaty and not in control. Delayed reaction to the bite?
Madison and Elena are in the store. They see Antonio. He says they shouldn’t have come. They brought fish and ice to trade for meds. Antonio likes what he sees, and says his group will want more of those. They overhear Francisco being interrogated by a bandit about La Colonia. Madison wants to know what they’re saying since the interrogation is going on in Spanish. Elena tells her they’re discussing an American with ratty hair who gives them drugs. Madison jumps to the (correct) conclusion that they’re discussing Nick, and she barges into the interrogation, much to everyone’s displeasure. Great, she’s going to blow the whole deal because of this.
Madison and Elena stand face to face with the interrogator-bandit. Madison wants to know about Nick. No one says anything. The Interrogator-bandit is nonplussed when Madison quizzes him about Nick. He’s like, who is this woman, why is she asking me questions, and get her out of here pronto! Elena tells Madison they have to go otherwise they will be killed.
Nick talks with Reynoldo. Nick wants to do the trade because they need more water, and now that Francisco is gone, he’d like Reynoldo to go with him. Reynoldo comments that Americans are always trying to fix things, but agrees to go with Nick. Nick sees Luciana and Alejandro and a couple of other people talking. Nick asks her what’s up. Luciana says they’re the inner circle and they need more reassurances about La Colonia, so she gave it to them.
Strand isn’t looking good. They need to keep him warm, and he’s lost a lot of blood. Alicia covers him up. Strand says Alicia has a good bedside manner. She says she did some volunteer work when she was in high school. Alicia tells him that she won’t say that everything will be alright because it might not be. He laughs until it physically hurts him. He then tells her that her bedside manner is abysmal.
Strand asks about her comment that she raised herself. Alicia talks about Nick and drugs and her dad. He asks about Madison. Alicia says she had her hands full. Strand says she has her all to herself now. Alicia says she didn’t want it like this, and that she’s still not sure Madison sees her. Strand says ‘make her’. Hmm, he could be toast. That was looking like a final bit of advice. Hope he doesn’t die yet, he and Nick are the best parts of the show.
Nick looks out at the walker pen with the bus. Maybe Francisco talked, because Antonio and a bandit look through binoculars at Nick.
Ofelia is looking at a map. She pulls out a rosary and has another flashback. She sees Griselda. They’re doing housework at home. Busy weekend. Ofelia asks how her mom chose her dad. She’s dancing around her engagement and so is quizzing her mom. Griselda says she’s a hard woman, Daniel’s a hard man, they’ve suffered. Griselda says you can’t imagine the violence they saw. Their dreams are infected. To live in fear. Griselda would have done anything for Ofelia or Daniel. That is love. Back to present day. Ofelia says she understands now. She looks like she’s going to try to cross the border back into the US – probably into New Mexico, and then to Santa Fe. Oh, Ofelia.
Back at the resort – the lights go on – at night. Madison turns on all the lights. Alicia is mightily upset with Madison because Madison is putting them all at risk because of Nick. Madison says that your child is always your child. Alicia shoots back with ‘I’m your child’. She continues that Nick chose what is outside, away from us. Alicia says that she’s there and asks why she isn’t enough for Madison. Madison is quiet.
Meanwhile, outside of the resort, someone sees the lights from the hotel. His back is to us, but we see that it’s Travis. He seems to be alone. Where’s Chris?
I like the title of this episode, but wonder what it means for the characters. Lot’s wife looked back and got turned into a pillar of salt. Ofelia is looking back, by attempting to go find her lost fiance. Madison keeps looking back, trying to get Nick. Elena keeps trying to rescue Antonio. Luciana and Alejandro are both trying to hold onto La Colonia.
