The episode opens in a jungle with the little boy from the last episode. He’s looking at the river and it is filled with bodies. The little boy is Daniel.
Daniel and Ofelia wake up when they hear the shot (Strand killing Thomas). Daniel tells Ofelia they have to go. Ofelia can’t keep up when they run outside. Daniel says she has to keep up and then she scratches off her face. Then Daniel wakes up for real. Ofelia is still asleep in her bed, and thankfully, her face intact.
The group all discover Thomas dead in his bed. Celia is very upset, slaps Strand and says his soul is empty. She asks why Madison is there, and Madison says she’s Strand’s friend.
Daniel and Ofelia are outside and he asks if Ofelia is okay. She says yes.
Travis and Alicia are also outside, although elsewhere. Travis tells Alicia they have to find Chris. Alicia tells Travis about Chris the knife in the bedroom just now. Travis doesn’t want to believe this.
Strand and Celia fight over Strand killing Thomas, and Nick tries to broker a peace between them. Celia agrees to leave the room, but then she tells them that in one day she wants all of them gone. She leaves the room.
Travis is outside in the dark looking for Chris. They might be in the vineyard, but it’s dark and hard to tell. Travis spots Chris and runs after him.
It’s dawn and people are talking in the courtyard and Daniel is lurking around outside. They are digging a grave and gathering pigs and other animals.
Travis is outside and sees a dead man against a chain link fence with an empty holster and a knife in his head. Travis pulls the knife out of the man’s head and keeps it. It looks like Travis is finally seeing the benefit of keeping a weapon.
We see Chris in a different area on the estate and he has a gun in his back pocket, probably that guy’s gun. Is it possible that Chris killed this man?
Madison tells Nick and Alicia that they have to get back to the boat. Madison tells them that these people are not our friends, and that woman is dangerous. Nick says he can deal with Celia. Madison is having none of it. Nick looks skeptical and a little disappointed.
Travis is out exploring some of the other poorer estates. He sees a child dead by a swing. He sits on a chair to rest, but hears a noise. Oh, he’s barefoot, and that’s why he’s having such a hard time walking. I guess in all the excitement, he didn’t have time to put on his shoes. Travis explores the house, a hovel, really, knife in hand. A man comes in and threatens him and Travis says he’ll leave. The man goes to get some water to help Travis. Travis says thank you. He asks about Chris. The man says he doesn’t speak English. Travis’s feet are a bloody mess. Oww. The man is sympathetic, but he doesn’t speak English, and Travis doesn’t speak Spanish.
We hear a walker, and then we see Nick walking up with Luis, now a walker. Daniel, Celia and the others see him. Nick is covered in blood as he brings Luis in. Madison sees Nick covered in walker blood. She’s trying to process all of this.
Celia talks about her changed son. He may be changed, but he’s still her son. And she tells her goons to put him with the others (down in the cellar). Celia tells Nick that they don’t understand us. She sees Nick and touches him. She tells him to stay with her. He asks about his family – can they stay. Celia says you are not like them. He says they aren’t bad people. She questions who is the monster? She allows them to stay but says that Nick is responsible for them, and their actions. But Strand is not welcome. She says this is not the apocalypse, this is the beginning, the beginning of eternal life.
As Strand digs the grave for Thomas, Daniel tells him not to put Thomas into the ground. He tells Strand the ground is infected and Celia is evil. They fight over the shovel. Daniel says that Thomas will return. They aren’t the same (human), and they hate you for it. Strand asks what’s wrong with Daniel, and Daniel says not to put him in the ground.
Nick washes off in an outside shower. Madison brings him some clean clothes. Madison says Nick is different. She wants to know why he is so fascinated with the dead. He says they aren’t dead. Madison and Nick argue about Celia. Nick says Celia wanted her son back. And so Nick brought him back for her.
Nick tells her that he can walk among them. Invisible. Madison looks horrified, but Nick says that he will not die. He does sound a little crazed.
Ofelia is praying and Daniel tells her to come with him, they are going to see Griselda. Daniel kind of goes crazy, and Celia’s goons take him away.
Strand continues to dig the grave, and Madison says she knows what Thomas meant to him. She asks him about Nick, and Nick’s fascination with the dead. He says Celia has her hooks into him with all of her weird religious stuff. She asks Strand ‘where will you go?’ He says he’ll go back to the boat, if there is a boat. He hesitantly asks if she’s interested. She says she can’t leave without Travis. He says to stay then. Strand and Madison discuss whether they are friends. Strand doesn’t want to put himself out there for her. It’s a good scene, he’s quite vulnerable at the moment, and when he asks Madison if she’s interested in going back to the boat, he doesn’t really look at her, just in case she rejects the idea, but hopeful that she won’t. So when she says she can’t leave without her family, he’s hurt, and that’s why he says ‘stay then’.
The man gives Travis some shoes and points to a picture of his son. They try to communicate about their sons. The man points Travis in a direction outside. Travis wonders if that’s the direction that Chris went. Then Travis sees movement behind a closed door. The man is hiding Chris because Chris is holding his own son hostage. Travis fights with the man to open the door and sees Chris. Chris says he will kill the man’s son, Ramon (and Travis) if Travis doesn’t let Chris go.
Celia is giving a memorial service for Thomas. Thomas really was her son, even if not by blood. She will bury him. And people will honor his memory. Strand is present, having dug Thomas’ grave. People walk by and pour dirt on Thomas. They make the sign of the cross. Celia tells Strand that it is time for him to leave and he says he’s not done yet. She is going to have her goons remove him, but he threatens them with the shovel. She doesn’t want violence so she allows him to finish burying Thomas.
Ofelia wants to see Daniel. Celia says she can’t let Ofelia see him. Ofelia says Daniel isn’t a bad man, and Celia says of course not.
Travis and Chris. Chris says people look at him like he’s a monster. Travis tricks Chris, and Chris runs out. Travis and Chris get into a physical fight, Chris tries to kill Travis, but Travis overpowers him. Chris tells Travis that Chris is no good.
Celia has Daniel in a cell. She has food for him – more of her pozole – but he won’t eat it because he thinks she’s poisoned it. She thinks he’s afraid of her. He says no. Daniel says the creatures are an abomination, and they are against god. He’s hallucinating words. Maybe it’s Griselda. Celia says for him to ask forgiveness. Celia says he is dying and he should confess while he still has the ability to speak. Daniel sys that he has nothing to say to Celia. Celia says that she will take care of him, and that there is a place for him here. It’s not clear if she means as a human or as a walker. He then hallucinates Griselda.
Nick walks by Travis all covered in walker guts. He says that he’s there to bring Travis back. Travis says to Nick that he can’t come back, and neither can Chris. Just go back and say you never saw us. Travis is going to stand by Chris. At least Travis now realizes that Chris is mentally unstable, and that Madison and Alicia weren’t making anything up.
Celia is looking at Thomas’s blood-stained pillow. Madison says that Strand saved all of her group. She asks Celia about Nick. Celia says he’s remarkable. She sees the light inside of him. He understands that the changed ones are our responsibility. She asks what if she can’t do that? Celia says that Nick will choose then – the undead or Madison and her family. Madison says she wants to understand and Celia says ‘come with me’.
Griselda and Daniel in the cellar. The scene is mostly in Spanish with subtitles. It works well. Griselda says she doesn’t like it here, and he says this place is unholy. He’s happy to see Griselda. He missed her with all of his heart. And he loves her very much. She says that he did not bury her. He’s sad that the was unable to do this for her, and that he looked for her. She is upset that he gave her all of his sins. He said he hid nothing fro her. She says oh yeah? He’s still haunted. He flashes back to the dead in the river. And he says there are so many. And she says the first one. Little boy Daniel takes the gun. Old Daniel says he told her about the man, his first victim. What they made him. She says no, the first victim was him – Daniel. Daniel looks sad.
Celia takes Madison to see the walkers in the jail in the cellar. Celia and Madison go inside. Celia asks Madison if she would stop loving Nick if he were dead. Madison quietly hangs back and then locks Celia inside the cellar with the dead. Madison leaves. Celia faces the dead stoically.
A man comes and unties Daniel and offers him the poisoned pozole. Daniel head buts him and frees himself. Griselda says ‘quickly my love. For me, for Ofelia, for you. I am waiting for you.’
Strand, the nurse, and others, escort Strand outside the gate. He says not to worry about him, he’ll hail a cab. Nice. Alicia waves good bye to him.
Daniel opens the gate with the walkers and pours gas inside. He pours gas all among the wine bottles. The walkers are eating and coming toward him. He stands there. Where’s Celia? Is she the one being munched? Griselda comes forward. He has a lighter and throws it at her feet. The trail of fire hits the walkers. They stand and burn. Griselda smiles and Daniel watches.
Strand is in the truck. Nick is outside and sees the compound go up in flames. Madison goes inside to find Daniel. It’s a conflagration now. Everything is in flames. Strand yells for them to get in the truck. Ofelia is there too. Madison goes toward a figure in the dark. It’s Nick. Nick tells Madison that he couldn’t find Travis. He wants to know where is Celia? Now the walkers are coming. Strand urges her to come along. Nick won’t come with them. He runs to the walkers. The rest get in the truck and drive away. Nick is seen walking among the dead but he is not dead. Madison cries. The truck leaves the compound and goes through the gate. It’s a nice scene – Nick in his disguise, covered in guts, the night scene lit by the raging fire.
So, we don’t know if Daniel and/or Celia are dead, and Travis and Chris are out there, some distance away. And we don’t know if there is a yacht waiting for them.
