Inside a church in Mexico, with little alter boys singing – very Catholic. The background colors are all gold and brown, very religious. The priest is sitting by the alter, looking haggard. There are worried looking parishioners inside, listening to the service. In Spanish, the priest says the times we are living in are testing our belief. They all get communion. Where is our god and why would he test us like this? The priest says that he knows the answer. The god he knows wouldn’t do such a thing. This isn’t our god. This evil wants us to turn away from him and our faith. It feeds our doubt. Don’t give in to it. Do not feed it. Everyone is getting communion while he gives his speech. They go outside and pick up weapons.
A truck drives up. It’s Thomas. Thomas says the priest is fighting death with death and not to do this. People begin to not feel well. They begin bleeding from their eyes. Thomas looks around and sees people falling to the ground. Thomas doesn’t know what to think. The priest says Celia is responsible for this. Thomas looks worried. He holds the priest as the priest dies.
Back on the Abigail. Travis is questioning Chris. Chris says he didn’t do anything wrong and asks why is everyone so mad at him. Travis says people think that he killed Reed when Reed wasn’t sick. Chris wonders if Madison said this, and Travis says that Madison is worried about him.
Strand, Luis, and Madison discuss how they’re going to get into Baja. The contact person is Miguel. A zodiac raft is coming toward them, but there’s someone on the raft in addition to Miguel. Strand tells everyone to go downstairs in the hold so as not to be seen. Daniel translates for them. He is telling them that Strand is negotiating, and how much will it cost. Luis is giving them payment. Miguel thinks there are extra people on board and wants to make sure there are no infected on the yacht. Daniel cocks his gun. They hear gun shots above and screaming. They remain below. Then the door opens and the engine room is filled with light.
Strand is striding by up on deck. They see Luis dead on the floor. Someone is still shooting at them. Daniel goes outside and takes a knife and kills the guys who are dead. He puts a knife in each of their heads. Turns out Luis isn’t dead. He’s been mortally wounded though. Ofelia doesn’t want to hurt him. Luis gives her a medallion to give to someone. The medallion has two big owl eyes. They prevent Daniel from killing Luis. Daniel takes the medallion and throws it in the water. Luis looks really bad. He whispers something to Nick. No more gunshots.
Shooting has stopped and Strand says that they think that whatever is on the land will kill the people on board.
On land, the group from the Abigail hike to their destination. Strand says they’re close. They see dogs eating the parishioners. Chris takes a good long look. Strand sees Thomas’s empty truck and cries ‘Thomas’! He searches outside and then inside of the church. No Thomas. A bunch of walkers come up to fight the group – the parishioners. They begin fighting. They kill an alter boy. Daniel kills the priest. Nick fights the little girl in the pink dress and kills her. Daniel is upset by killing the priest and hallucinates as he struggles to kill an alter boy. He killed a child back in the day and conflates the two boys. Ofelia saves him by killing the alter boy.
A walker goes to kill Madison and Chris doesn’t help. He stands by and watches as the two grapple. Alicia sees what’s going on and rushes in to kill the walker. Chris looks like he’s in a daze. They look for Nick. Nick is off by himself, and he’s very upset that he had to kill the little girl.
The group makes drives to their destination in Thomas’s truck. All are quiet on the approach, all of the deaths weighing on them. They see the estate where they’re going. It’s vast and very nice. They drive up by a big wall and gate. No walkers will get in there. Music is playing as if it’s the promised land. There are old growth vines in a good-sized vineyard, and a very large Spanish style mansion. It’s white and gold.
Strand walks briskly along the path as the others follow him. A woman greets them. It’s Celia. He asks if Thomas is there and she says yes. Strand tells them about Luis, that he’s dead. Celia isn’t that worried, and says that he’ll find his way home.
A woman nurse tells the group she will give them a tour of the house but no weapons go inside. House rules. They give up their weapons. Daniel is reluctant, but goes along with it.
Celia asks a guard outside Thomas’s room how he is. The man says ‘quiet’ – which can’t be good. Strand goes in. Thomas has a bite on his arm. Blood has seeped through the bandage. He says to Strand, ‘better late than never’. Strand touches his wound and says he’s sorry. He’s upset. Thomas says it’s okay, he waited for Strand. Strand looks genuinely upset.
When they are alone, Strand says if he had gotten here in time, maybe he could have done something. Strand is very teary. Strand picks Thomas up to put him into the bed. He says ‘I got you’, and it’s very sad.
Alicia is watching an old movie on TV when Chris walks in. He asks her what she’s watching. She doesn’t know, it’s something old and recorded, and gives him the remote. He asks if she’s mad at him. Alicia said she saw what happened. She says she saw Madison’s fight with the walker. He watched and didn’t help Madison. Chris says he froze. He grabs her and says you have to believe me. She asks, what if I tell? And he says I don’t want to hurt anyone and walks off. Alicia looks surprised.
Celia is chopping up cilantro in the kitchen. Nick walks in and tries to speak Spanish with her and charms her. She brings him some soup – pozole. He thanks her and tells her it’s amazing. He begins to tell her about Luis. He says that Celia was on Luis’s mind as the died. She says Nick has a heavy smile, why? He says he’s a bit sick of it. All of the killing. She smiles at him. She says none of this is new. That the dead have always walked among us, the only difference is that now we can see them. Madison walks in. Celia tells Madison that Nick is special. Madison says that Nick is fragile, and thanks Celia for her hospitality. They are each being the alpha female.
Daniel is outside looking at a memorial and the owl carved into the tree, just like on the medallion. Celia asks if he is praying and he says no. She places a photo of Luis on the wall. Daniel watches Celia as they discuss prayer.
Strand and Thomas are in Thomas’s room. Madison knocks and comes in. She brings in food and Strand thanks her. Thomas apologizes for his lack of hosting abilities. She says she should go, when she hears him cough. He asks if she will look after Strand when he’s gone She says he won’t make it easy, and Thomas says that’s why he asked her.
Daniel is in a bedroom and they discuss Griselda when Ofelia comes in. She asks him if everything is okay. He kind of says yes, but he’s not okay. He’s not hungry though. He asks Ofelia to tell everyone he’s tired and not coming to dinner. She leaves him alone in the room.
More TV and Alicia. She’s kind of asleep with the TV on. Madison walks in and Alicia says it’s pathetic how much she misses TV. Madison says that she used to do that when she was a kid too. Madison said they’d find her asleep with the TV when they’d come back after babysitting. Alicia says that she was afraid that Madison wouldn’t come back.
Later on Madison and Travis argue. It seems that Alicia told Madison about Chris standing by while Madison fought, and that Chris threatened Alicia. Travis is trying to understand. Madison says Chris is sick. Travis asks, ‘like Nick’? They fight some more. Looks like Chris was right – if Alicia told Madison, it would break their family apart. Travis asks what if there is something wrong with Chris? Can they help him together? He wants to know if they’re together and she says she’s going to Alicia. He says he’s going to Chris. Interesting that there have been many episodes where Madison has asked if Travis is with her and he says yes, and now when places are reversed, Madison isn’t with him.
Strand and Thomas in Thomas’s room. Thomas is hot and wants the sheet off. Strand removes it, and asks if that’s better. He tells Thomas to go to sleep. Thomas can’t. Strand says the world was never good enough for him. Thomas cries and says he doesn’t want to leave Strand. Strand says that he could go with him. Thomas whispers ‘how very Shakespearean of you’. Strand says shut up before I change my mind. Strand says Celia will watch over the two of them and then he kisses Thomas.
Outside in the dark. Daniel watches a kid put a dog down a chute. He says ‘the hell?’ Exactly, Daniel.
Nick and Ofelia walk outside and end up at the shrine. Nick says if a girl asks you out and doesn’t tell you where you’re going, she’s taking you to talk to Jesus. Ofelia says she wants to talk to her mom and lights a candle. She asks when was the last time Nick was in a church and he can’t remember. I’d guess it was when he was shooting up in the first episode of the first season. Nick looks at the memorial and the owl carving on the tree as Ofelia tells her mom that he’s worried about her dad and how lost he is without Griselda. Nick remembers the first episode and Gloria and the dead people in the defunct church/drug house. Ofelia finishes her prayer and thanks Nick for coming with her. He smiles at her and says nothing.
Daniel walks into the cellar and hears a kid say he’s getting better at juggling. Daniel asks who is he talking to? He says his mom. Daniel says will you introduce me? He lets Daniel in and says you can talk to her through the gate. It’s a jail filled with walkers!!!
Daniel goes back into the house and tells Celia he just got back from the cellar and what’s the deal?
Celia says they’re family. it wasn’t safe for them out there where they were hunted. She’s making hosts (communion wafers) and he states that she poisoned them (the parishioners) which killed them. He continues on saying that Celia is endangering them all by bring death to everyone. She asks why Daniel is afraid? She picks up the platter with the hosts and leaves the room.
Celia is singing to Thomas and wiping his head with a wash cloth. She kisses his forehead. Strand tells her the song was lovely. She said that when Thomas was a child, he was afraid of the dark, and that song always helped him. Strand observes that he was a creature of habit even then. She says that she never thought Strand was good enough for Thomas but she was wrong about him. They both eye the hosts. He asks how long will it take and she says not long. She kisses Strand on the forehead and tells him to sleep. Strand sits and looks at Thomas.
Nick is wandering around outside and goes to Celia outside. Celia says Madison worries about him. Nick says he’s given her reason to worry. Celia aks him what he wants to know? He says the dead aren’t really dead, are they? She says no, they aren’t. So what are they? They are what comes next, she replies.
Back in Thomas’s room.. Thomas’s breathing is difficult and Strand watches him. Strand holds his face and kisses his cheek, and then Thomas dies. Strand gets up, tears on his face, and walks toward the untouched (poisoned) hosts.
In another room, Travis sleeps and Chris gets up.
Strand stands above Thomas.
Alicia and Madison are sleeping in a room. Chris calls Alicia – maybe to see if she’s awake? He walks forward into the room and stands over them. He has a knife in his hand. A gunshot is heard and they startle awake and see Chris and the knife and yell for him to leave.
Strand has put a pillow over Thomas’s head and shoots him in the head through the pillow. Hm, so I guess he decided not to kill himself after all. Or maybe he never intended to kill himself. Maybe he said he would just to make things easier for Thomas. It’s really not clear. Sad, either way.
